Steps of Protection You Can Take To Ensure Confidentiality |
|
Some tax whistleblowers are more concerned than others about protecting their identity. We at S & P Law Firm take certain Steps of Protection to protect our clients' confidentiality. However, we have listed here (and we will continue to update this list at the request of our readers) some effective steps for you to take to protect your identity: - As difficult as it might be, do not discuss your tax whistleblower case with anyone . . . especially your best friend. These cases take place over a period of time. Should a divorce occur between the time the claim is filed and the time that payment is made, such a payment could be considered marital property/community property and will surely become part of the divorce proceeding. That is, it will become a public record, something you may never have considered at the time you bragged to your spouse about the huge reward to which you may be entitled.
- Loose tongues sink ships. It is easy to get excited about the millions of dollars that you may receive. Your attorney should be able to give you a good idea of what your chances are of success once the package is put together and submitted. There are a lot of things to consider, including the possibility of collection. Therefore, you are in the best position to protect yourself. Find the right attorney and trust him. Do not talk to anyone else.
- For all communications in which you act as a whistleblower, and for communication with your lawyer, obtain a prepaid calling card. These are prepaid telephone cards that can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, Walgreens, or other national chain stores.
- These cards can be kept in your wallet and should be used only for a specific caller.
- Do not mix callers on the same card.
- Never renew the minutes on your card.
- Always pay for the card with cash, never with a debit/credit card.
- Never use your personal cell phone. Instead, purchase a prepaid cell phone.
- Never use a business phone.
- Consider dialing *67 to block your caller identification when placing any whistleblowing calls.
- Consider using a public fax machine to send information rather than a fax machine from work or home. A public fax machine is available at your local Office Depot, Office Max, etc. The typical charge is nominal.
- Use a public computer, such as one from the local library, to communicate.
